Building upon the needs analysis, this design brief outlines a comprehensive training program aimed at improving the surface finish quality of 3D prints, reducing failed prints, and consistently delivering high-quality results. This assignment showcases my ability to translate identified needs into a practical and effective instructional design strategy. This assignment was completed as part of my coursework for the 3442 - Foundations of Instructional Design course at the University of Toronto.

Needs Addressed
The design process involved several key steps:
This design brief addresses the performance gap identified in the needs analysis: an increasing trend of failed prints due to irregular surface finish.
This gap was attributed to a lack of knowledge and skills among operators, particularly in advanced slicer settings, troubleshooting techniques, filament loading, nozzle calibration, and bed leveling, as well as the need for coaching and mentorship for managers and supervisors.
Design Approach
Defining the Purpose and Goals:
I clearly defined the purpose of the training program and established specific, measurable instructional goals for operators, managers, and supervisors.Developing a Design Strategy:
I created a blended learning approach that combines self-paced eLearning modules with face-to-face training sessions to maximize learner engagement and knowledge retention. The program was structured into four modules, each addressing specific sub-topics and learning objectives.Outlining the Instructional Strategy:
I detailed the instructional methods, activities, and assessments for each module. This included the use of eLearning lessons, interactive simulations, hands-on practice, demonstrations, group discussions, and branching simulations.Creating an Implementation Plan:
I developed a structured plan for the deployment of the training program, including the timeline, delivery methods, communication channels, and resource requirements.
Results and Takeaways
The design brief provides a comprehensive blueprint for a training program that aims to equip the 3D printing team with the competencies needed to improve surface finish quality and reduce failed prints.
Key takeaways from this project have shaped my design perspective. They include:
Learner-Centered Design:
This project reinforced the importance of grounding design decisions in a thorough design plan to ensure the training effectively meets learner needs and achieves desired outcomes.Strategic Blended Learning:
I gained deeper insight into how blended learning can be strategically employed to optimize engagement, knowledge transfer, and accessibility for diverse learners. The Power of Planning:
Developing a detailed implementation plan highlighted the critical role of proactive planning in ensuring successful training deployment and maximizing impact.
